A security guard was hit with an axe during a terrifying robbery outside a supermarket in Leeds.

The man was collecting a cashbox from Asda in Wortley on Monday morning when he was attacked by a masked man who tried to grab the box and, following a struggle, hit him with the weapon.

The robber escaped in a car which was later found abandoned. A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “At about 10.45am the guard was attacked outside Asda in Lansdowne Street as he collected a cashbox from the store.

“He was confronted by a lone male who had his face covered. He demanded the box and struck the guard with an axe when he resisted. The guard received minor injuries.

“The robber took the box, which contained a significant amount of cash, and got into a waiting black Ford Focus which sped off out of the car park and was later found abandoned in nearby Highfield Close.”

North West Leeds police are appealing for information. Officers say there were a number of people in the area at the time and are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, saw the car being abandoned or who has any information that could assist the investigation to come forward.

Contact Detective Sergeant Ian Lawrence at Pudsey police station on 0113 241 4823 or via the non-emergency number 101, or call Crimestoppers, in confidence, on 0800 555111.
